This dip is exceptionally versatile. Serve this dip with pita chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables for a quick, easy, and delicious appetizer or mezze your guests will love! Use it as a spread on crostini or in sandwiches.
You can also use it as a bed for roasted or grilled vegetables and other toppings. There are so many options…
You can’t go wrong with feta cheese. It pairs amazingly with almost everything adding a briny, salty zing and a burst of flavor to any dish. For example, you can add crumbled feta to any salad, on avocado toast, use it to top a cooked meal, or simply cut it into small cubes and serve it as an appetizer drizzled with olive oil and oregano. Use it in Greek cheese pies, savory tarts, quiches, and more. Wrap it in foil with tomatoes and peppers and bake it for an out-of-this-world appetizer.
Lately, I made this feta dip for an impromptu get-together, and it became part of my favorite appetizer list.
Why does this recipe work
The best part about this dip is that it’s easy to make. Simply combine feta cheese, Greek yogurt, and extra virgin olive oil in a food processor and blend for about 5 minutes until smooth, fluffy and creamy. You can also add your favorite herbs and spices. Then simply transfer it to a serving bowl and enjoy! The options for how to serve it are nearly endless!
Many recipes for whipped feta use cream cheese or sour cream as the base for the dip. Instead, I like to use plain Greek yogurt; it is in line with Mediterranean eating. In addition, the Greek yogurt balances and tames the sharpness and saltiness of feta while bringing just enough tang and a smooth velvety texture! An excellent extra virgin olive oil helps achieve the perfect consistency, elevate the flavor, and enhance the silky, rich dip.
The Best Feta Cheese Option For This Dip
It’s all about the Feta cheese; it is the star ingredient of this dip recipe.
The imported Greek Feta is made with sheep milk or a mix of sheep and goat milk. You can still make the dip with domestic feta, but you will not get this recipe’s rich texture and flavor. Instead, buy a block of feta cheese in brine, as it is moist and will yield a richer, brinier flavor. It makes such a difference! The pre-crumbled feta is drier and saltier and often contains extra ingredients to prevent caking.
The European Union recognizes imported Greek Feta cheese as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product. This is because the traditional Greek feta cheese is produced according to strict traditional methods unique to Greece, some dating back 3,000 years since the times of my ancient ancestors. This is what makes it the real deal.
Luckily, nowadays, you can easily find sheep’s milk feta at your local grocery stores and wholesale clubs before you buy domestically produced brands.
Ingredients to use for this recipe
- Feta Cheese: Use a block of good quality feta refrigerated in the brine. It makes such a difference! Also, the pre-crumbled feta is drier and saltier and often contains extra ingredients to prevent caking.
- Plain Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt will add an extra smooth, creamy, velvety texture to the dip. Use plain, unflavored Greek yogurt.
- Lemon Juice and Zest add piquancy and aroma to the dip.
- Extra Virgin Olive oil: The olive oil helps create a smooth, rich texture and adds extra flavor.
- Garlic
- Dried thyme
- Dried oregano
- Dill
- Ground white pepper: White pepper has a slightly different aroma and taste from black pepper, and its color blends entirely with the color of the dip. If you do not have it at hand, you can always use black pepper.
How to make this Creamy Whipped Feta Dip
- This whipped feta dip is so easy and quick to make! It takes only 5 minutes and two steps. Simply whip all the ingredients together in a food processor, and then add a few items to garnish and serve.
- The feta cheese blends easier at room temperature. Remove the feta cheese from the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before preparing this recipe.
- In a high-speed blender or food processor, combine the feta, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, zest, garlic, thyme, oregano, and dill.
- While the processor is running, add the olive oil drizzling through the top opening until the feta is combined with the Greek yogurt into a smooth texture.
- Taste and season with sea salt, and white (or black) pepper, to taste and pulse to combine.
- Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh dill. Serve immediately with pita chips or pita wedges, tomatoes, and pitted Kalamata olives.
Notes and Cooking Tips
Use high-quality Greek feta cheese. For this recipe, opt for feta cheese made with sheep or a mix of sheep and goat milk. Avoid pre-crumbled feta, which is too dry and often contains extra ingredients to prevent caking and won’t taste as good in this recipe.
Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil to add flavor and richness to the dip. You can taste the difference between an inferior, cheap brand.
Serve immediately to take full advantage of the whipped, creamy goodness. When you refrigerate it, the texture will thicken, while the flavors will be intact.
If you need to make the dip ahead of time and refrigerate it, let it come to room temperature before serving.
Serving and add-in suggestions
You can serve the simple version of whipped feta, as in this recipe, with a side of vegetables and pita wedges or pita chips.
You can also top this dip with Roasted Tomato Salsa.

You can also toast some pine nuts or chopped walnuts and sprinkle them on the dip.
Make-ahead tips and Storing leftovers
You can make the dip ahead of time and refrigerate it. Then, let it come to room temperature before serving.
Store plain whipped feta dip in an airtight glass container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
